Researchers are reporting a connection between low cholesterol and suicide. They looked at the cholesterol levels of 99 patients admitted to emergency following a suicide attempt and compared them to 74 nonsuicidal psychiatric patients and 39 normal people involved in an accident.
The cholesterol readings showed a significantly lower cholesterol concentration in those individuals attempting suicide as compared to the other two groups.
The researchers write that "these results support the previous claim that lower cholesterol level is associated with an increased risk of suicidal behavior."
